Collateral

Collateral

The Collateral was made in 2004 and is a crime thriller and the stars which acted in this movie are Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx. This movie was directed by Michael Mann.  In this movie it is about Jamie Foxx who's characters name is called Max being a normal cab driver and he is dropping people off and then he Vincent who is Tom Cruise, so as he gets into the cab he has told Max where to as they have arrived, Max has stayed outside to wait for him to take him to a different place. This movie had made over $101,005,703 in America only and in other countries it had made $116,758,588 so in total it had made over $217,764,291.

The picture of the thriller above shows Tom Cruise as the man person as he is the only person on the picture which indicates that this movie is about this man and what he is going to do, furthermore it also shows in the background a cab which shows that he may be doing business in a cab and making the driver take him different types of places. This is shown in the background maybe it may have a something to do with it as Tom Cruise doing stuff with the cab. Lastly at the bottom of the of this poster it says ' It started like any other day' this may show that Tom Cruise is doing this job daily and doing what he does best, on the other hand it may indicate what the cab driver is thinking that he thought it would be just a simply day but turned out differently.

The trailer below shows what are the main parts of the film. At the being of the trailer shows what Jamie Foxx does for a living and what job he has, furthermore it also shows Jamie Foxx talking to somebody who is in is cab, but we don't know who it is. In addition it also shows what somebody is offering him some money which shows that there might be a business deal going on which shows that he needs Max to do the business with him. As we go on we see Max to eat we see his cab and then we see a man hit his cab as he was falling down in the air. Then Max finds out that Vincent had killed him.

In this movie there are many scenes where they have used a digital camera. In one particular scene when the coyote is running across the road shows which shows that they had used low light which allowed the Mann to film the coyote to without to set the light up.

So in this scene below it shows Max who is Jamie Foxx is tied up to a steering wheel which shows that he has been captured or taken as a prisoner and as he has wants help, two to three men have came and Max thought that they cam to help, however it turned out all wrong because they are now stealing from him which shows that Max is stuck both ways and one of the men had taken the briefcase of Vincent which shows that he needs the briefcase to do his job. So as Vincent comes out he finds out that they have take his briefcase and talks to them. So as he is talking to them the man that had the gun had pointed it at Vincent then Vincent gets his gun out and kills the men that are there expect for Max.

The scene below shows when Max and Vincent get stopped by the police. In this scene it indicates that the police have spotted something strange about the cab and made them stop the cab and ask them questions. So as they have pulled over to one side they are going have told Max to give him his licence and registration so they can look at if he can drive or not, so as it goes on he is stalling the officer by telling him different stuff so it shows that he is stalling so they won't get caught. In addition to this it also shows that one of the police officer has seen that the glass is smashed and seen blood on the top of his cab, so Max has to lie and say that he had hit a deer so that he wouldn't get arrested. Lastly as they have pulled them over they have told Max to open the trunk however there is a dead body in there so that if they find out they will get arrested, however they got a last minute call saying they have to be somewhere else so they did not have time to see the trunk.

Lastly in the scene below we see when Max and Vincent are going to meet Max's mother who is in hospital. So in this scene we see when both of them come in, after and gave his mother flowers, however she doesn't like the flowers but Max tells his mother that Vincent had got her the flowers. So the mother has found out that there is someone is in the room. As he tells his name they start to talk and the mother gives Vincent all the information that Max has given to him that he runs a limo business and drops famous people off. This hows that Max was not telling the truth to his mother as he is a cab driver.

No Country For Old Men

No Country For Old Men

This movie is about a ordinary man has found a lot of money in the desert where lots of people have been killed, so he can deliver all his fortune that he needs. This movie is a crime and thriller based movie. This movie is mostly based on the villain.

The trailer below shows the parts of the movie, most of the movie is based around the villain. In the trailer we find out what the story is about and how the villain acts. This trailer shows about how the villain reacts when the man takes the money, he goes round the town to find him and the money however it was not that is. The villain his more or less relaxed he is not stressed out to find it because he thinks that he will find the money without people to find him. Further on in the trailer the villain is asking a man to tell him what side the coin is on and he is making it difficult because he wants to know what he is playing for. Plus the villain is making trying to make him scared because he doesn't know what he is playing for. Plus this trailer targets the audience by showing them what is going on and to see what they are doing with each other to get the money. In addition to this it gives the audience a idea that the villain is taking what is right fully his but are making a scene that they are going to see what he has to do to get the money.

The scene below is the opening scene of the movie it shows a normal desert which has no noise at all just the wind rushing by, however in this opening scene somebody is talking through it and telling the audience what has happened in that type of area, they may expect that nothing happens in this area however a lot has happened in this area as the man speaking saying that he has put somebody into the electrical chair because someone killed a 14 year old girl.  In this opening scene it has non-diegtic sound at the begin as there is music playing but the audience don't know where it is coming from , plus the man that is speaking we don't know who he is and why he is informing the audience. However there is diegetic sound as the police man shuts the car door and drives away leaving the sound of the car as it drives on.  Later on in the opening scene there is a police man which has his work clothes on and the villain wearing all black which may indicate danger.

The Manchurian Candidate

The Manchurian Candidate
The Manchurian Candidate

The Manchurian Candidate was made in 1962 and was made by Richard Condon and this movie is based about a son of the US political family who are brainwashed to assassin the Communist party. As you see below there is poster of the movie, this poster shows a man with a gun pointed at his head which indectaes that he might get killed and someone wants kill him.  Furthermore it also show the the audience that this movie is like you haven't seen this type of movie before.

In the link below it shows the trailer of this thriller, this trailer shows all the key factor on what the film is about and what it is based on. As you are at the beginning of the trailer it shows a man has been scared by a nightmare maybe, this implies that something is going to go wrong in real life. As you go on the trailer you identify what is going on in there mind and showing what they see in real life, so that as they have been brainwashed they are getting to do things without them knowing and showing no emotion.  As the trailer starts to end it has a picture a queen from a pack of cards with the title from the film, this can show that someone important or someone big is controlling them.

Later on they had re-made the film in 2004, this was directed by Jonathan Demme. The trailer bellow shows at the beginning it introduce it by showing Denzil Washington have bad nightmares and is dreaming about when he was in the war and how they have put something into there brain to control me. So as it goes on he is confronting the vice president to see if he has anything to do with them getting brainwashed. As it keeps going you see a man that looks like a doctor and giving instructions to the vice president. Ad the character that Denzil Washington plays starts to explain to the vice president what is going on and what is in his brain to warn him and to try and get rid of what is going on. So as that happens Denzil Washington starts to get crazy and paranoid about what is going on.

Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene

The mise-en-scene is a French meaning term "in the scene or frame". The mise-en-scene have different types of things which indicate about it and they are:

  1. Setting and props
  2. Costume, hair and make up
  3. Facial expressions and body language
  4. Lighting and colour
  5. Positioning of characters and objects in the frame

Colour first was used in films such as voyage a travers l'impossible by the pioneer George melies in 1904.

Denotation and Connotation

Denotation is the literal description of an idea, concept or object.

Connotation is what we associate with a particular idea, concept or object.

Different colours work on the subconscious mind to create mood.

I had watched an the being part of the movie called Casino Royal. So the mise-en-scene shows in Casino Royal is that we have two different sides of him. The first sign of him is that he is calm and not worried about anything and the other side of him is being aggressive and violent when he is fighting. Furthermore the first side of him shows that he is in control, as well as the other side of him because we see him kill one of the villain, plus they are in two different settings. The first setting is in a apartment or a office with the lighting dark and the second setting was in a disgusting public toilet as they are fighting. The positioning in the first side is that James Bond is not moving he is staying in the same position, however in the second side is that he has all different types of facial feature and being pro active.

Pyscho

Psycho

Psycho is a thriller made by Alfred Hitchcock, this movie is about a women called Marion who works in a office is fed up with the life she is living in, in addition during her lunch breaks she meets up with her love called Sam they cannot get married due to Sam is all ready married and the divorce will show that the person he is married to will take half of the things he owns.

During her work time on a Friday Marion is trusted by her employer to put $40,000 in the bank for, however she is seeing a different way to take the money and start a new life of her own. So she leaves the town and starts to head to Sams store which is in California, as it was a long journey and a storm comes she has stopped at a place called The Bates Motel. This hotel is managed by a young man who is called Norman who is dominated by his mother as Marion doesn't know that. Hitchcock had thought that if the film was roughly about $40,000 he would think that a murder would become a shock, this makes the audience shocked for the rest of the film. As well the audience will realise that there would be murder in the film but have no idea when it would be or would she or he kill someone.

The threat from this film is a mentally ill man. This thriller is also packed with action and fast paced. The examples would be when Norman attacks Marion in the shower, this shows that this is fast paced because it happens so quickly, also when the detective goes up the stairs and get stabbed in the head by a woman, this is fast paced and packed with action.

There are two different types of heroes, the first is Norman because it shows that he has killed the woman who had taken the money for herself, however the other heroes are Sam and Marion sister who come and tell the police officers that he is the man who and murdered the man.

Alfred Hitchcock represents Norman in different ways, first he shows Norman to be a charming man who is flirting with Marion as the are sitting and eating, however he shows Norman is nervous as he keep suturing and keeps on moving his hands this shows that he is presented in different types of ways.

In this thriller they use different types of suspense, red herring and cliffhangers . Hitchcock use suspense by introducing a horror type of music as Norman has entered Marion room and when he starts to stab her when she is in the shower.

Hitchcock wanted to show the audience how it like to be in the thriller by giving them as much detail as they can in the movie and they want them to experience what they are felling in the movie.

As they have watched psycho or talk about it they refer to the shower scene due to the fact that they think about how great they had created that scene, in addition this scene was one of the greatest ever in film making history. The shower scene gives the audience the imagination of what power the viewers would have.

North By North West

North By North West

North By North West is a movie made by Alfred Hitchcock. This movie genre is a thriller. This movies is based on a person called Thornhill who is accused by a government of doing something and suggesting that he is the person who doesn't exist. Mr.Thornhill is trying to survive by getting away from the spies who are trying to kill him, also the police are trying to find Mr.Thornhill because he is being accused of killing somebody who he had not killed.

Alfred Hitchcock uses different types of devices in this movie fro example he uses suspense, red herrings and cliffhangers. Hitchcock uses these devices are used in the auction scene Thornhill is trying to make the auction complicated and he is saying different prices and low prices so that he can get himself arrested and not get him self killed so he can help Eve so she won't get killed.

During the crop duster scene shows tension to the audience by showing them what is going to happen and why it is happing to him. This scene shows that it has a atmosphere as he is the alone there is nobody to see what is happing to him. Furthermore this shows that Thornhill is being attacked by the government who are trying to kill him. Plus as they zoom into Thornhill's face shows that it is a tense scene showing that he is being attacked and showing the audience that there is suspense in the movie. Furthermore as this movie is a thriller this movie contains a plot that the villain has the driven plot. This shows that the hero has the obstacle where he has to save himself. This is the truth in North By North West because it shows that the villain is trying to confuse the hero and trying to tell the hero what is going on, also telling him what he has to do to stop it. This Relates to the Macguffin.

The Macguffin is the things the spies think about but the audience that are watching it do not really care about it. In addition the Macguffin is a plot which it catches the viewers eye and makes them pay attention, it also makes the viewers show what the plot is about. The Macguffin is also used for specific personality for example it id used for money, power, threat and many more. The Macguffin is used in films but mostly in thrillers, however it is not the centre of attention in the first part of the scene and it reduce the important parts of the movie. This may come back into the movie, however the Macguffin is forgot at the end of the movie.

Hitchcock had said that thrillers allow the audience to get stuck in to see what it is like. Hitchcock has succeeded in this film because it shows how the audience are getting into the movie.

The Birds

THE BIRDS

The Birds is a thriller which was released in 1963. This was Alfred Hitchcock most treiffing film he has made. The thriller bird is based on hundreds of birds attacking the public. This starts to happen regularly in the film, the first time the birds start to attack is when Melanie is coming back from
Mitch house then she had got attacked by a bird and made her head cut. This shows that they have not noticed that the birds have started to attack them. Furthermore this thriller shows that it is faced paced also it shows that it is always packed with action, this indicates that the story is still moving on with the action going on. For example as one of the scene of the man's eyes have been pecked out it shows the dramatic facial expression the woman is expecting. In addition to this there is a awkward silence going on as she has found out that the birds have been in as she looks at the broken tea cups, as she keep son walking the woman is shocked and there is no noise that she is making. As she has entered the room she is looking around to find out what has happened to the man, as she looks further on she has seen the man without his eyes the reaction was like she was going to pass out as she has looked at him.

Moving on towards the school scene. This scene shows dramatic irony in it by showing that as the audience start to find out that the birds have started to gather, however Tippi does not know the birds have started to gather around in the playground behind her. As they have started to gather the school children are singing a child song so it gives it that scariness to the audience, Hitchcock had used the well because it gives the
e idea that the birds are evil and shouldn't take nature for granted, this also shows when they are at the cafe it shows a high angle of birds started to pour down and started to attack the humans this implies that as the high angle shows that someone has sent them to attack the people to send a warning possibly.

The Macguffin shows the plot to grab the viewers attention and drives the plot of the movie. The macguufin uses different types of nature for example undefined and generic, and many more this also shows that this commonly explains money, power, survival or a threat. The macguffin is most used in thriller types of movies, however the most general focus is on the first act. This may comeback into the film, although it is normally forgotten at the end of the film.

The scene when Tippi goes up too the room with all the birds in there took a week to do due to the fact that they had connected really birds to her clothing so the don't get away from her. This movie was used in 370 different types of shots.

At the end of the film there were different types of endings that they could have chosen, as one of the shots was the birds were covered over the golden gate bridge. However the film was not finished with a title the end, Hitchcock wanted to tell the audience that the birds have taken over. Due to the fact of the movie called The Birds Alford Hitchcock wanted to tell us that we are harming birds.

Lighting exercise

Lighting

We have looked at different types of lighting techniques and they are:
  • Key light
  • Back light
  • Filler light
  • Under lighting
  • Top lighting
  • Back lighting
  • Low key lighting
  • High key lighting
They have different uses in different types of ways of filming. They use lighting to make the effect look better, in the film.

The key light is the most brightest light and the most influential, this is because we can get the look of a object of a person.

The back light provides the effect of the key light or creates an outline of a person or a silhouette.

The filler light provides the softness of the hard shadows that the use of the key light and the back light which they create.

Underlighting is used when the main source comes from the below the subject. The slighting effect is mostly is used in thrillers and horror movies to create a effect to show the viewers that they are dangerous.

Top lighting is the main source of the lighting because it comes from above the person so that they look better than they look before.

The back light shows the source behind the certain subject, this implies that if there is no other lighting used the silhoutettes are created.

Also there are two different lighting which are low-key and high-key.

Low key lighting Is created by using the key and back lights, which will produce a fine contrast of light and dark in different areas on the screen also very deep, distinct shadows will be formed. This is also known as chiariiscuo, this is from the italian word for light - chiaro and dark- oscuro.

High key lighting  is mostly used by filler lights , which shows that the lighting will appear more realistic.
